There's an old myth that crossbows shoot like guns. In a sense, mechanics are the same thing. This does not mean that a crossbow is effective at 200 yards as some rifles are.
Yes, a crossbow shares some of the functions of firearm shooting. There's a safety button or a switch, you pull the trigger to fire the arrow, and you shoulder the crossbow as you shoulder the rifle. However, there are more differences than similarities.
The crossbow is a piece of precision archery.
You fire an arrow with strings and limbs and compound crossbows, cables and
cams. Much more similar to traditional archery and compound vertical bow
functionality The speed of most crossbows shoot are at 100fps of vertical bow
speed (300-400fps) rather than at 1,000+fps of the most bullets. These elements
also mean that their effective range is comparable to that of other vertical
archery equipment.
As part of the TenPoint Family of Brands, our crossbows are visible at 20 yards right here in the factory. When the consumer receives their product, in a matter of minutes, they can drive down the range and shoot effectively. As with most vertical bowhunters, the effective crossbow range is approximately 40 yards. At this distance, most hunters are able to fire a crossbow precisely enough to be lethal.
Like vertical bows, the name of the game is kinetic energy. As the arrow follows its path down the range, the greater the distance to its target, the greater the loss of kinetic energy occurs. Heavier arrows tend to reduce the speed at which any piece of archery equipment is shot, but are better able to maintain efficient kinetic energy at the point of impact. With a steady hand and a heavier arrow/broadhead combination, some hunters may be able to pull off a 50-yard shot. This distance is about the maximum for effective crossbow hunting.
There will be some target shooters who claim, or perhaps even have proof, that they shot their crossbow at other distances. Keep in mind, however, that just because they were accurate at these distances, it does not guarantee that their arrow would have delivered enough oomph to be lethal while hunting.
When it comes to crossbows, the case with any weapon, remember that the shooter determined the effective range, not the equipment. As a hunter, if you're only comfortable shooting at 20 yards, the crossbow doesn't automatically allow you to shoot at 80 yards. Keep in mind, too, that most of the archery shots on white-tailed deer in the woods are 20 yards or less.
In order to increase your effectiveness while shooting a crossbow or any piece of hunting equipment, it is best to practice like hunting in order to turn your target practice into a trophy. Practice standing on a tree, ground blind, or whatever you're planning to hunt. When you are hunting the success rate will be higher if you are comfortable with the shooting scenario
